Our VMM/Camara orientation training programme took place in Kiltegan, Co. Wicklow from the 15th to the 20th of August, 2010. The group comprised of a total of 22 candidates and as always they came from all walks of life. The aim of the course was to introduce participants to the work of Camara/VMM and how we operate as a organisations, while at the same time assisting prospective volunteers to prepare for their role overseas. The orientation course also gave participants the space to reflect on their personal motivation and preparation as well as increasing their understanding of Mission and Development issues. Some of the issues covered were:

  • Personal and professional motives for working overseas
  • Ethical issues in Development
  • Power relations, the role of the volunteer in Global Development
  • Interpersonal skills, leadership and group dynamics
  • Personal health and safety
