In August, DIT donated 180 computers to Camara Education from sites in Kevin Street, Aungier Steet and Rathmines for reuse with the potential to transform the lives of over 3,500 children in East Africa. Camara Education, a social enterprise and charity, specialises in the re-use of computers to educate children in disadvantaged schools in East Africa, Jamaica and Ireland.
DIT are acutely aware of the need to minimise wastage of resources and believe that the right thing to do when disposing computers is to assess their reusability elsewhere.
DIT signed an agreement with Camara Education in July 2011 to handle DIT’s computer disposal allowing DIT to maximise reuse of computers that it replaces.
Camara Education refurbish computers, load them with educational software and distribute them to schools. Key to Camara Education’s mission is training teachers on using computers as an educational resource.
DIT’s computer will be deployed as educational tools in East African schools by the end of 2011. DIT’s decision to re-use their computers has the potential to transform the lives of over 3,500 children in East Africa, providing them with a better education and the chance to break the poverty cycle in which they find themselves.
John Fitzsimons, Camara CEO said; “Camara’s focus is on education, but through the re-use of IT equipment the solution also provides environmental benefits by extending the life-cycle of existing equipment. We are delighted to work with DIT in re-using their equipment for the benefit of students.”
“We are an enthusiastic supporter of Camara Education’s mission. We are delighted that DIT’s computers will be reused to deliver effective education for impoverished children in East Africa.” said Ciaran O’Leary, DIT Senior Lecturer in IT.
Since 2005, Camara Education has refurbished over 25,000 computers for reuse in education. This would not have been possible without the support of companies like DIT that recognise the environmental and educational value of computer re-use prior to recycling.
