Settling back into work after Christmas I had a note from John Hennessy introducing me to the ITEMS (Integrated Teaching Elearning Modules) project. The project is called ‘Improving Education in Maths and Science’ and aims to promote an inquiry based model for students using ICT. The project is an EU Leonardo project involving the EU Schoolnet and partners in Spain, Slovenia, Germany and Ireland.
The project has resulted in some fantastic resources including materials on Electricity, Astronomy: Earth in the Universe, Environment: Climate Change & Sustainability, Geometry: lines, angles and circles, Graphs and finally Linear Functions.
The resources are available under creative commons which means that Camara can host modules on our own Moodle site allowing a further audience to share access to the materials.
So far teachers across Ireland and Africa can access the Electricity module from the Camara Moodle site. Go to http://www.camara.ie/moodle and log on (if you don’t have access but would like, log on as a guest or email firstname.lastname@example.org) to check out this great resource.
Each year with the help of our volunteers we download a copy of Camara Moodle and share via a USB or DVD with our partners in Africa. This allows teachers and students at schools who don’t have access to the Internet the opportunity access a wide pool of exciting resources and electronic activities.
Camara hubs also allow their volunteers free access to Camara Moodle, in Zambia you will often find volunteers practising their French during breaks from PC refurbishment.
The Camara Moodle site hosts a variety of courses and resources such as: Computer Literacy; Technical courses such as Networking and Linux Administration; ICT in Education; French Listening, Grammar and Language; Disability awareness and much much more.
