Last Thursday, September 25th, Camara’s London hub celebrated a landmark occasion – the shipment of its very first container of computers to Africa.
The centre at Elephant and Castle, which opened last October, has enabled Camara to benefit from donations from companies in London and the surrounding areas.
The centre, which began accepting computer donations in March of this year, hosted volunteers, donors and board members to celebrate the departure of its first shipment to Africa. A 20-foot shipping container packed with 500 much-needed computers left Camara’s London HQ bound for Dar es Saalam, with the equipment to be distributed to schools across Tanzania.
Camara takes used, surplus IT equipment from companies and individuals, refurbishes it, and provides this technology to schools in disadvantaged regions of the Caribbean, Ireland and seven countries in Africa. The computers are loaded with interactive educational software which negates the need for internet access. The computers greatly enhance the education and, in turn, livelihood skills, of the children who have access to them, thereby contributing to efforts to break the cycle of poverty.
If you or your company has computers to donate, please contact Camara in London on 0208 265 7681 or in the Republic of Ireland, contact +353 (0)1 65 22 665. Collection can be arranged for donations of 20 or more computers.
