Volunteers are a central part of the workforce in Camara Dublin and contribute enormously to the work that is carried out both in the workshop and with our operations in the office. At the heart of it all, volunteers hold true altruistic values, that desire to do good, to benefit the lives of others.

The Dublin hub is the primary refurbishment and deployment centre for Camara operations. Our office is a hive of activity with volunteers supporting Camara in everything from administration and communications to fundraising and marketing. The dedication and commitment of so many volunteers brings with it a vibrancy and diversity to the organisation.

In 2014, a remarkable 241 volunteers contributed to operations in our Dublin hub alone and clocked up an incredible 36,072 hours of volunteering, with an estimated economic value of over €800,000. These volunteers made a huge contribution to the shipment of 11,623 computers to disadvantaged communities in parts of the Caribbean and Eastern Africa. These computers will help provide digital literacy skills to over 240,000 children, showing just how far the impact of volunteering can stretch.

Over the years Camara has built up excellent relations with local IT colleges, offering students structured work placements which compliment their studies and giving them the opportunity to get some hands on experience. We work with many of the Education and Training Boards, providing the practical component which is needed at the end of the course for students to graduate.

Volunteering offers something different for everyone and there is no denying there is a constant feel good factor that drives volunteers to do what they do. CEO, John Fitzsimmons has said “Our volunteers are the embodiment of Camara Education and what we strive to achieve here. We are on course to have educated our one millionth digital literate child as a result of our work over the last 10 years and this landmark figure would not have been possible if it wasn’t for our volunteers, both past and present.”
