Double your Donation, for one week only

Camara has been selected to take part in this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s largest match funding campaign. We are seeking to raise £40,000 to restore and upgrade digital learning centres in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia. By replacing outdated equipment and training teachers, we ensure students continue to benefit from technology. To maximise impact, we provide technical support to sustain these vital resources.

Donations made online between 3rd December and 10th December 2024 will be doubled. Please donate when our Big Give page goes live at 12pm on December 3rd.

£50, doubled to £100, will provide a fully functional refurbished computer for a digital learning centre. If you can give £125, doubled to £250, you could pay for two fully functional refurbished computers for a digital learning centre and training for one teacher, directly impacting over 600 children and thousands more over the teachers’ careers. £2,500, which becomes £5,000 for Camara, will provide one school’s network training and maintenance for four years. Or just £25, doubled to £50, will provide approximately half a day of digital literacy training for a class of students, giving them a better chance of making the most of their life opportunities.

Situation

Camara Education is addressing the digital divide in Ethiopia,Kenya,Tanzania, and Zambia, where technology in schools is limited. In Kenya, the student-to-computer ratio is 120:1, while only 11% of Tanzanian government secondary schools have computer labs. Ethiopia faces similar challenges, and in Zambia, only 39% of schools have computers. Since 2005, Camara has provided 4.8 million children with access to computers, installed labs in over 12,800 schools, and trained 45,000+ teachers.

Solution

Camara focuses on enhancing digital education across Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia by upgrading digital infrastructure and expanding our reach. We refresh ICT labs, recycle outdated equipment, and train 25 teachers and 10 school leaders in 5 schools to integrate technology into teaching. Technical support ensures sustainability, while in 2023, we supported 429 schools, enabling 190,000 students to become digitally literate. With additional funding, we aim to scale up in 2024.

Campaign Aims

  • We aim to restore and enhance digital education in schools across Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia by upgrading computer labs and providing curriculum-linked learning materials.
  • The funds will also empower teachers with the skills needed to integrate technology into their classrooms, ensuring that students are equipped with essential 21st-century digital skills.
  • Ultimately, our goal is to provide students with digital skills to enable them to gain employment or continue their studies.

Campaign Budget

  • £24,000 – Computer hardware, including desktop computers per school, 2 laptops for teachers and a server
  • £12,000 – Camara’s Product Development Team support and training
  • £4,000 – Tech support, maintenance, transport for equipment and technicians

Understanding the Target

All donations, large or small, are vital and will be fully utilised. This project can scale based on the number of schools rehabilitated, supporting both new and existing schools across our network. With nearly 20 years of experience, we’ve never faced disruptions in all four countries. We constantly monitor risk and will redirect funds if political or security issues arise, ensuring the project’s success.

Reporting

Monitoring and evaluation forms an integral part of all Camara’s projects; the server installed in each lab enables us to collect detailed data on the usage of the computers, and we combine this with feedback surveys and interviews with students and teachers. Donors will receive a personalised email including a report with pictures, testimonials and stories showing the progress of the project as well as testimony from students at the school.
